Jungle Safari in Rajaji National Park
There is a moment in most Rajaji safaris that people don’t forget. The jeep stops. The engine stops. And somewhere in the trees ahead something big is moving. Then a wild elephant steps out onto the dry riverbed and a calf follows, and suddenly no one in the jeep is talking.
That’s the excitement of jungle safari in Rajaji National Park. This is not a zoo, and there are no guarantees. But this is a real forest, and not very far from Rishikesh. It is one of the easiest ways to see wild India without taking a long trip.
We go there a lot with guests, so this is what we would tell a friend before they go.
Why Rajaji National Park?
Spread across the foothills near Rishikesh, Haridwar and Dehradun lies Rajaji. The sanctuary came into being in 1983 by merging three smaller sanctuaries and has been named after the freedom fighter C. Rajagopalachari otherwise called as “Rajaji”. The park measures about 820 sq km and has been part of a larger tiger reserve of about 1,075 sq km since 2015.
Here you get a mix of sal forest, grasslands, dry riverbeds and the Ganga flowing through it. It’s also an elephant corridor so the main thing are elephants. The rest is populated by leopards, deer, monkeys and lots of birds. There are tigers in the reserve too, but really very few visitors ever see one so head for the forest and count a tiger as a lucky extra.

Picking a Zone
Rajaji has several safari zones. Here’s the short version:
| Zone | What It’s Like | Good For |
|---|---|---|
| Chilla | The most popular and best-organised route near Rishikesh | First-timers, elephants, river views |
| Motichur | Forest tracks closer to Haridwar | Elephants, the odd leopard |
| Ranipur | Quieter and less visited | Leopards, peace and quiet |
| Jhilmil | Wetlands and swamps | Birdwatchers, swamp deer |
| Kunao and others | Remote areas | Slow, patient wildlife watching |
If it’s your first safari, start with Chilla. It’s the nearest, it’s easy to book and it has a good record for elephants.
What You Might See
Wildlife depends on luck, season and time of day. A realistic list looks like this:
- Asian elephants: The real star, often in family groups
- Spotted deer and sambar: Almost always
- Langurs, macaques and wild boar: Everywhere
- Peacocks and many bird species: A joy even if you’re not into birding
- Leopards: Occasionally, mostly in the quieter zones
- Tigers: They live here, but sightings are rare
Some drives are packed with animals. Others are mostly tall trees and birdsong. Both are worth it, if you go in with the right expectations.
The Best Time to Go
| Season | Months | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | November to February | Cool mornings, good visibility, the most comfortable time |
| Spring | March to May | Warmer days, animals gather near water |
| Summer | June | Hot, and slots can be limited |
| Monsoon | July to mid-October | The park is usually closed or restricted |
If you can manage it, take the morning slot. Animals are most active just after sunrise, and the light is lovely. Afternoon drives are good too, especially for photos. In winter, carry a proper jacket for the early start, because an open jeep gets properly cold.
