Kedarkantha – Winter Trek – Starts from Sankri

Kedarkantha peak is situated within Govind wildlife sanctuary in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. The peak of Kedarkantha is almost 3800 meters high and one of the best winter treks in the Himalayan/Shivalik Range of Himalayas. Usually, people start their trekking from Sankri village and it will take 3-4 days to complete the summit depending on person to person and their strength. Most importantly how open their lungs are which is measured as fitness among trekkers.
Kedarkantha Trek has usually considered the easiest trek as the height is not more than 12,500 ft but some people felt difficulty in summit the peak so it has been categorized as a moderate peak now. If 100 people are going to the summit, only 60 people are going to make it. 40 people either feel breathless or their will to climb/trek goes so low that they surrender to the peak. And they try again next year, some succeed and some need more training. Mostly, city people who come to trek the Kedarkantha peak face the problem of climbing it, some do not give up and summit it and some, unfortunately, could not make it sometimes.

Well, never mind, there are a few things that we need to practice if we are going for Kedarkantha Trek.

1. First is, of course, one must be fitted with strong willpower. Willpower play a strong role as There was a couple spotted at Everest Base Camp Trek who were having weights of almost 90kg & 100 kg respectively. So will power play a key role in trekking a peak.

2. Most of us do not breathe properly, which affects our lungs, if you know the anatomy of lungs, there are ‘Alveoli’ aka balloons within lungs and due to gravity, most of the alveoli are located above the stomach. Only through abdominal breathing technique can we somehow manage to use some 80% of lungs (alveoli) and more lung usage means more oxygen and more oxygen means more strength. Some pranayama practices help like internal retention for 1 minute or so! Practice it and it will increase the time of holding the breath.

3. The purpose of doing something always helps to build willpower too. It could be anything. It has always been a pilgrimage for our trekkers and that is how they see it. Please understand, it is not something like tourism, it’s a great way to explore yourself through such activity, when you go to high altitude, you will definitely feel something great and different kinds of wisdom comes to you. Use the such activity as a possibility and transform self through the self.

4. Have an intention, do not be just a consumer who is going there to have fun and come back. Be a little independent! Please take eatables with you while trekking, have less dependency on people, if possible, carry your food & tent and experience it yourself if not you have options. Carry a beg and something useful in it.

5. And this is very important! Never litter in the mountains. You are there to enjoy the beauty of the mountain and it’s your responsibility that it remains intact. Be a responsible human to mother earth and the mountains. If you do it mindfully, it would be a life-changing experience. Stay mindful and joy will come to you, we have covered resourcefulness already!

Itinerary For Kedarkantha Winter Trek
Dehradun to Dehradun

Around 10-hour (220 km) drive from Dehradun to Sankri Village (with Tempo-Traveller). You are requested to be near Dehradun Railway Station by sharp 6:30 AM. We will be travelling through Mussoorie, Purola to Mori and eventually Sankri. The first day stays in Sankri and your trek journey has started! BSNL is the only available network here, you will be provided a nice stay. After dinner, you really need to sleep to get ready for the next day. It’s recommended.

It is a 4 km long trek for the first day! The day starts with some important instructions given by the trek guide followed by breakfast in the morning and after registration with the Forest department, you are ready to trek to Juda ka Talaab (Hargaon campsite). Juda ka talaab is beautiful and mostly frozen. So, you better see the beauty when you arrive there. No metaphor is being used to explain it here. Well, you will be staying in a tent inside the sleeping bags. Winter is coming slowly and there are no wildlings! 😉

Again, the trek distance from Hargaon to Kedarkantha Base camp is 4 km. and it will take 2-3 hours to reach the base camp. This is a beautiful trail and you will be trekking through the jungle of Oak. If snow is there, it would be a little tough to trek but otherwise, it’s fun. You can chit-chat, sing songs, laugh, enjoy watching Oak trees and meadows and even dance to some local numbers (Garhwali songs) too. And you will realize that base camp has arrived! Now you are hungry and want food badly and sleep. Later, enjoy a little inspection around and guess what? Dinner is ready. Imagine people calling you to eat.

Enjoy your night but remember the next day, you must wake up at 3 AM only if you want to do the summit.

Now, this is a very important part of the trek as you will be trying to summit against all the conditions only if you are there. There is something that motivates you to go and trek that 6 km to the summit. Do not give up and try to do the summit. Your breathing exercises are going to help you here coz at some point, the climb is quite straight and that might exhaust you. If you manage to make it to the summit, it is time to be there and observe and see the beauty. There is a temple too, you can chant mantras and worship too. It is very cold there and windy too. After some time, you are requested to descend to Base camp. There are many ways to go down, look around and you will see the option. Hope you are adventurous enough to take a chance. After reaching the base camp and having lunch, rest for a while and again descend to Hargaon camp.

Now, we are going to Sankri, the same place where we started from. Going down can sometimes become so tricky that your legs give up. It is suggested that you never move without less strength. Hold on to your strength and mind. You are going through pine trees while enjoying views of mountains and peaks only if the weather is clear. You will be provided the same stay plus food. It is on you if you want to try out something in nearby cafes or hotels. There are few options.

No departure will take place as you are taking so much stored in your hard drive (brain) and would come back to feel this cold in Kedarkantha again. You are now friends with some strangers and share pictures and social accounts and even phone numbers too. So how does it feel? Do you think it was a transforming journey? If not, you need to do it again. Dehradun is 10 hours away so you better post pictures on social media accounts and shares them with your friends, inspire them to trek and yes, do not forget to review us on Facebook and other networks. Dehradun arrived! 😉
